During
autumn holidays (20/10/2016-27/10/2016) the students of Taras Shevchenko
Himnazia took part in the international youth project called «Polish -
Ukrainian Guide of Positive Actions». The initiator and coordinator of the
project was Ms. Mirela
Szymczak. The coordinator from
Ukraine was Iryna Kharchenko. They were also helped by the teachers of English Joanna
Krauz-Zalewska from Poland and Hanna Dudich from Ukraine.
The aim
of the project was to promote
active citizenship, develop tolerance and celebrate cultural diversity. Another goal was to stimulate
creativity and develop interpersonal
and leadership skills in young people. The project
fostered a positive image of Polish - Ukrainian cooperation not only among the
participants, but also in the local community.
The project participants worked in mixed intercultural
groups. Students learned to
identify urgent problems of the modern society and to collaborate in order to
sort them out. They used SMART, GROVE and DISNEY strategies and modern coaching
techniques to brainstorm the ideas. As a result, the students created a guide
of positive actions to inspire other young people to become change-makers.
During the project,
the students also visited the Schindler’s Factory. The exhibition in the former
factory of Oskar Schindler is located in its former administrative building.
This exhibition is a story about Cracow and its inhabitants during World War
II, both Poles and Jews, who lived in Cracow at that time. Children saw where
the lack of tolerance to cultural diversity can bring humanity.
Polish and
Ukrainian students shared the results of the project and presented the cultures
of their countries during the final event called The Festival of Positive
Actions followed by the Folk Evening attended by the parents of Polish
participants, school principal and members of local community.
The «Polish
- Ukrainian Guide of Positive Actions» will soon be published and there you will
be able to see detailed information about the project and learn how to develop
tolerance and active citizenship.
